FileMaker Coaches' Corner - Tip 6 - Find Range Operator
Hello everyone. My name is Mackenzie and I'm one of the coaches with Richard Carlton Consulting.
For today's tip I want to go over some special operators in the find mode of FileMaker, specifically using the range operator. Here I have a copy of FM Starting Point open, and I have created some sample data for us to work with. There are some invoices here and they all have had their paid date field filled in their dates range from January 2nd to January 13th. If I wanted to do a find that involved a range of dates for example between January 4th and January 6th I could switch to find mode and type in a first date then click on the new request button to type a second date then again click on the new request button and then type a third date. I then hit the enter key and the find would execute. FileMaker now has a found set of four where all the records here match one of my dates that I entered.
To find this way is a bit of a tedious process and gets longer and longer the more dates I want to search for. Instead, to keep things efficient, I can use the range operator to perform my find. The range operator is special because it allows you to perform finds on a single field by specifying a range of values to search within a single find request. To use the range operator, switch to find mode, specify a lower boundary value (in this case a date January 4th 2018) then type a range operator as dot dot dot the range operator. The symbol FileMaker Experts looks like an ellipses or you can also just say it looks like three dots.
Then you specify an upper boundary value which will be our date January 6th 2018. And so we hit the enter key to execute the find. The result is a found set of 4 just like before. As we scroll through all the records of the found set we find all the dates are in between the two boundary dates that I specified. As you can see this method is a more efficient way to search with date ranges. This concludes today's Coaches Corner.
